Course Information
English
Programme OverviewThe English Language Programme offers students the opportunity to study at a level appropriate to their needs. English is available for absolute beginners, medium level students and for students who wish to study in Tasmanian Polytechnic Mainstream courses. There is also the opportunity to study at a more advanced level. Students will also be able to participate in other activities, from the more serious IELTS preparation and Academic Skills study, to horse riding and day trips to see more of Tasmania.
Special FeaturesStudents have 2 afternoons of options, which include IELTS Preparation, Cooking in English, World Movies and Excursions. Excursions have included visiting Cadbury's, Richmond, Bonorong Park, and Mt. Wellington.
Teaching and Learning EnvironmentMaximum class size is 20 students.
Listening, reading, writing, speaking, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary skills are taught using a topic, function or situations approach. Students work in pairs and groups and will complete individual exercises, assignments and oral presentations. In class, students are expected to participate in group and class discussions and in problem solving exercises. Lessons are structured to meet the students' English needs of living and travelling in Australia, and may include preparing for the IELTS examination and preparing for further study. Most teaching is classroom based but, where appropriate, teaching may occur in the computer lab, library, kitchen or on excursion.
AssessmentNew students are given the assessment timetable for their class so all students know when assessments will be held. Generally, two assessments are held for each class each week. When a student has achieved the twelve units required for their level, they are awarded a Certificate and progress to another class. Assessments include oral presentations, individual exercises, assignments, small tests and interviews.
FacilitiesThe English Language Centres in Launceston and Hobart are both recently renovated. Classrooms are bright and relaxed and the centres are very close to the main campus in each city. Both centres provide access to computers and have extensively resourced libraries that specialise in English learning.
