Introduction

Welcome to Hobart College, a state government institution with a proud record of achievement. International students at the year 11 and 12 level have taken part in the college program for over fifty years.

The college values the presence of International Students and the extra dimension they bring to our college life. We recognise that achievers goals require hard work and commitment and our goal is to fully support students academically and personally. Teachers, Advisors and Counsellors are available to help students to succeed.

Hobart College

Hobart College is situated on Mount Nelson, which overlooks the city and the suburb of Sandy Bay. It is set among natural bushland, while only being 15 minutes from the city by bus. The College is housed in six multi-level blocks, which enclose a central courtyard and walkway. Students spend a great deal of time outside - our mild climate allows students to take advantage of fresh air and sunshine.

The enrolment at the college is approximately 1,200 students. All are in years 11, 12 and 13. Most students are aged between 17 and 19 years old, but there is also a group of mature aged students who have returned from the workforce to study. There are normally around 80 students in the International Student Program. They have come from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan, Korea, China, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, America, India, Fiji, Tonga, Nepal, The Cook Island, Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Chile, Kenya and the Solomon Islands.

Previously known as Hobart High School, Hobart College was established in 1913 and was located in the city area. The College moved to the current campus only 20 years ago. The college offers over 100 subjects at a range of levels. It caters for students who wish to proceed on to university as well as those who intend to enter the work force at the completion of their studies.

Studying At Hobart College

If you are not an Australian or New Zealand citizen you can study as an International student at Hobart College. The College provides a variety of pathways for students to follow including university, TAFE and employment.
The pre-university Foundation Program is for students who have completed Year 10 ( or equivalent) in their home country and wish to do a Year 11 and 12 program in preparation for entrance to any university in Australia. You will be awarded a Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) at the successful completion of Year 12. This certificate is recognised internationally as a Year 12 pre-university qualification. If you have already studied the equivalent of Year 11 in your home country you may enter Year 12 directly and be eligible for university entrance.

Many students who have already completed Year 11/12 or Year 12 courses in their home country do a one year 12 Foundation Course and then move on to an Australian University.
You would NOT be required to sit an IELTS or TOEFL test if you were successful in the TCE Examinations (which includes English exams at the university entrance level).
The College also has a comprehensive English language program and is able to cater for all levels of English.

Please refer to our Handbook for details of the many subjects you are to select for. You are able to change subjects at any time after discussing your future career aspirations with one of the International Student Advisers and we will do in all our power to reach your goals.
